China at the Center of the World: 400 year old map by Matteo Recci



A 400 year old rare map found,  was identifying Florida as "the Land of Flowers" and put China at the center of the world; went on display Tuesday January 12, 2010 at the Library of Congress. The map was created by Matteo Ricci, the first in Chinese to show the America, Recci was a Jesuit missionary from Italy and one among the first Westerners to live in what is now Beijing in the early 1600s. Ricci created the map in 1602 at the request of Emperor Wanli. Recci was also known for introducing Western science to China, Ricci's rare map includes pictures and interpretation describing unusual regions of the world. Africa was noted to have the world's highest mountain and longest river. The description of North America mentions "humped oxen" or bison, wild horses and a region named "Ka-na-ta." Many say that this was the Vision of the world before it was discover that the world is round.
